Will there be enough food to feed nine billion people living on Earth by 2050? The rapid growth of the world population is a major challenge for agriculture. Farmers need to increase their yields by 60 percent in the next decades to meet the global demand for food. However, arable land is limited and not infinitely fertile. Moreover, global warming and natural disasters threaten harvests and livelihoods, in particular of subsistence farmers in developing countries, who heavily depend on their land.

With 795 million people on Earth affected, it is beyond doubt, that hunger is a key global challenge today. At the same time, the world is also dealing with an opposing problem: Even more people – 2.1 billion – are obese or overweight, with an increasing rate in developing countries as well. Furthermore, many countries face what health experts call the “double burden of malnutrition”, namely under-nutrition and over-nutrition. Thus, while one part of the world is starving, another is becoming prone to chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases and hypertension, caused by eating the wrong type of food. Consequently, viable solutions for fighting both hunger and obesity cannot be based on the sheer quantity of food, but rather on the availability of the “right” food.

Three decades from now, we might still sit around a table enjoying our meal with friends and family. But what will we be eating? A growing world population, environmental concerns and resource depletion might force us to make changes in our diets. Meat prices are anticipated to double already in the next decade, making meat a luxury item. That is why some consider insects to serve as our main source of protein in the future. Processed insect powder may even be used for traditional dishes, such as steak or burgers. Others predict that we will rely on functional food, which will be 3D printed and adjusted to our needs. In this regard, genetic engineering may be the key to the future of food. With the help of genetic engineering, crops may be immune to pests, rice may be resistant to floods and peanuts may not cause allergic reactions anymore.

With nine billion people living on Earth by 2050, the political goal is set: We have to make sufficient amount of nutritious and safe food available at an affordable price. What seems to be easy in theory, is complex in practice: Today millions of people go to bed hungry each night. Yet, striking as it is, the percentage of people struggling with obesity is even higher. Both extremes of unhealthy eating habits lead to negative socioeconomic consequences in rich and poor nations alike: increasing costs of healthcare, lost economic output due to sickness absence and lower productivity, to name a few. Producers face equally serious challenges. Agriculture and livestock farmers on the bottom of the food chain are struggling to secure yields under changing environmental conditions and to remain competitive at increasingly globalized markets. Both agriculture and the food industry are already highly constrained by regulations, at least in industrialized countries. However, political interventions still seem to be utterly necessary. The question is how these interventions and policy options should look like.
